Gnome Killer?

Setup - Windows 8 Host

VMWare 9 - fully updated

Various Ubuntu based linux guests

Two recent Ubuntu updates appear to be consistent Gnome-Killers in every (Ubuntu-based) distro I've tried. The offending updates are:

libgl1-mesa-glx 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 and libglapi-mesa 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1

I suspected that there was an update that was killing virtual Gnome3 installs and I made a fresh installation of Cinnamon Mint with vmware tools installed and full graphics acceleration and the bug consistently manifests itself. Gnome will launch to the desktop then be totally unresponsive. Other distros seize-up either at log-in or (if autologged) to an unresponsive desktop.

I suspect that this is actually a VMWare bug as I can find no reports of this on-line.

Can anyone else confirm it?
