Does the above linked vib work for everyone for the Qualcomm Atheros AR8171/8175 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller?

I'm unable to try it out as the server is still in FedEx's hands.

Trying to find out if I need to run down to Fry's and pick up a known-compatible PCIe 1Gb NIC or not.

Hello

Thank you for the update. Can you check on that ESXi host hostd.log what is appearing on that or check vmkernel if there are issues with storage.

Thanks,

MS

Have you tried to reboot the host?

Have you tried to check partedutil output against local storage?

If there is any problem, post output of 'esxli storage core device list' so I can help you to run correct partedUtil command.

Sometimes there are some troubles with users from some regions. Ukrain for example.

Verify your my vmware profile and check that you filled it up correctly.

Well I talked too soon!

It turns out that now this Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS guest as well as all others too have lost their network connections!

To me this looks like a serious bug in the PRO 12.5.8 version, at least when running in a Windows 7 X64 Pro workstation like mine!

This time, what triggered the issue (at least this is what I believe) is that I configured DHCP on my router (an ASUS RT-AC68U) to reserve IP addresses for the bridged guests.

When I applied this the router sort of recycled and the network connections went down for a few seconds.

After this nothing network wise works on the VMWare Workstation PRO 12.5.8 anymore, not even closing and starting it again makes the guest networking work..

Last time (when I started this thread) the problem was initiated by me upgrading WS PRO12 to the latest version 12.5.8 and since it did not suggest that a restart was needed I proceeded but got these errors. A full system restart worked to get back to normal.

But now I have the same situation without even changing anything at all in PRO12, when the router network glitch happened both running guests lost their network connection and it was not fixed by rebooting the guests nor by restarting PRO12!!

QUESTION:
Can I downgrade to PRO12.5.7, which has worked fine for a long time? Or am I hosed after upgrading to 12.5.8?

Now I must close all of my working windows and reboot my whole system just to see if this will solve anything.

What a pain!

After the reboot I will test and then report back here.

OK, verified!

When I restarted Windows 7 and then VMWare PRO12.5.8 I could start the guests and get them to connect to the network!

So:

Why does the guest networking get lost if there is a glitch in the host networking caused by the Internet router reconfiguration?

Surely it should at least be restored if VMWare PRO12 is closed and then opened again? But this does not happen....

Something is keeping networking off on the guests in this situation until I reboot the host (which I do not want to do because it breaks up all of my work stuff).

I have tried this but all of it has failed:

- Suspend the guest and then resume it

- Disconnect/Connect the guest's network adapter

- Guest reboot

- Guest shutdown, PRO12 close, then start PRO12 and fire up the guest

The only thing that did work:

- Shut down guest, Shut down PRO12, reboot Windows7, Start PRO12, Start guest

This is a usability nightmare!

Host OS is Windows 10 Pro x64 Version 1709 Build 16299.125

How did the installation work for you?

The host sound device won't show up in the VM as PCIe device passthrough is not yet supported in Workstation Pro.

For Windows 7/8/10 VMs, the virtual sound device will either be Microsoft High Definition Audio (sound.virtualdev = "hdaudio") or the VMware VMaudio (i.e. sound.virtualdev line not present). As to which sound device it uses on the host, the closest thing would be the preferred device drop down list box in the VM configuration.

Alternatively, there are USB sound controllers, so in theory these can be passed through to the VM just like USB thumb drive and other USB devices are passed to the VM. And thus in such scenario, the USB sound device would be the sound controller inside the VM. I haven't tried this option myself but I would think you would have to disable the sound in the VM configuration so that it won't conflict with the USB sound device passthrough.

As for the KB, I just hope that some VMware employee sees it and updates it. Note that I am not a VMware employee so there is nothing more than I can do than what you have already done.

But having said that, there is at least one scenario where removing sound.virtualdev = "hdaudio" actually helps. This scenario is when the host is Linux and the guest VM is Windows 7; if the hdaudio is used, the sound in the Windows VM cracks intermittently.

There are no "required" alerts and dashboards you have to set up--it depends what you want to get out of it. Take a look at the default alerts and dashboards enabled with the content packs you download from the Marketplace (all free) and see what suits your needs.

How to know installed version of VMware Tools on Mac? For Windows and Linux is described in:

Verifying a VMware Tools build version (1003947)

https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1003947

I am using VMWare Fusion 10.1.0 (7370838) on macOS 10.12.6 (16G1114) Sierra.

Thanks and Merry Christmas!

If you experience this and happen to look in Event Viewer, you'll notice an error from vmauthd that complains of an incompatibility with a different-level version of vmmon.exe. So the "in-place" upgrade is not doing the right thing with regard to vmmon.exe. Downloading the full install and running the installation executable as Administrator fixed the issue for me.

Same issue here. Event Viewer shows an error that there's a version mismatch with vmmon.exe and to reinstall VMWare. I'm doing that momentarily (as Administrator) and will report back).

(time passes ...)

I'm back. Issue already under discussion in this thread, as is the solution.
